Current status and emerging opportunities for compound semiconductors
Boston, MA - March 3, 2008 - Strategy Analytics market analyst, Asif Anwar, presented his paper "Compound Semiconductor Markets: Current Status and Emerging Opportunities" today at the Key West Conference on Compound Semiconductors. Mr. Anwar will review the status of the GaAs RF industry and discusses threats from silicon on current markets in which GaAs is entrenched.
The presentation also updates the status for GaN opportunities in RF and high-power electronic markets, emerging opportunities in LED-based lighting markets, next generation optical storage and the potential opportunity in terrestrial photovoltaics.
"We maintain a strong outlook for GaAs, which offers end markets cost competitive solutions that currently outperform silicon technologies in mainstream and niche markets," observed Asif Anwar. "However, silicon technologies are improving through the activities of mainstream silicon houses, such as Infineon and Fujitsu, and these technologies will increasingly challenge GaAs across all market segments over the next five years."
Mr. Anwar concluded, "Longer term, we believe the requirements of the ITRS (International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors) hold the potential for compound semiconductors being integrated into mainstream silicon IC manufacturing."
