AT&T Surpassed Comcast in New 2007 Broadband Subs
Comcast Continues to Lead in Total Subscriptions
Boston, MA - 7 April 2008 - AT&T chalked up 1.8 million new broadband subscriptions in 2007, outpacing Comcast by 100,000 new subs over the year, according to "Broadband Service Provider Benchmarking: North America," a recently published report by Strategy Analytics. While AT&T won in incremental subscriptions, Philadelphia-based Comcast continues to lead the pack in terms of overall broadband subscriptions, reporting a base of 13 million at the end of 2007.
"The North American market remains very concentrated, with the top four players controlling 56% of the market," said David Mercer, Vice President of the Strategy Analytics Digital Consumer Practice.
The overall North American market reached 72.7 million subscriptions by the end of Q4 '07, representing a 16% year-over-year growth rate. Much of the future growth in broadband is expected to come from fiber deployments.
"We anticipate 2008 will be a critical year for both AT&T and Verizon, as their much publicized fiber rollouts begin to take hold," said Ben Piper, Director of the Strategy Analytics Broadband Network Strategies service.
