Automotive Implosion
Current Automotive Demand Levels and Low Profit per Vehicle Cannot Sustain the Detroit Boston, MA - March 17 2009 - The Strategy Analytics Automotive Electronic service report, "Road Maps for Detroit Restructuring: A Bumpy Road Ahead," examines the restructuring plans set forth by General Motors and Chrysler as mandated by the terms of the emergency loan received in December, 2008. Both the General Motors and Chrysler restructuring plans note important steps must be taken to reduce production volume, decrease labor costs and convince debt holders to exchange credit for equity. In addition, these two ailing automakers have petitioned the government for an additional $16.6 billion and $5 billion, respectively, in order to help them weather the current economic downturn. "Current plans for restructuring and new loans will do very little to sustain GM or Chrysler," remarked John Canali, Analyst, Strategy Analytics Global Automotive Practice. "The Detroit 3 depended on a high volume of vehicle sales in the past. They are in serious trouble unless an economic stimulus plan is able to gain enough traction to stimulate significantly greater automotive demand."
