Compound Semiconductor Growth from Defense to Outpace Commercial Demand
Boston, MA - September 22, 2009 – Presenting its key findings at an invitational breakfast meeting during European Microwave Week, 2009 in Rome, Italy, the Strategy Analytics Advanced Defense Systems and GaAs and Compound Semiconductor Technologies (GaAs) services will show that the demand from defense markets for GaAs (gallium arsenide) and GaN (gallium nitride) semiconductors will outpace the 5% growth projected for the overall market

Strategy Analytics predicts that GaAs will continue to represent the primary compound semiconductor technology for defense markets through 2013. Defense markets will also be pivotal for growth of the emerging GaN, with demand projected to rocket through 2013. Collectively, the market for GaAs and GaN semiconductor devices will grow at a CAGR of 14% through 2013.
“Demand for compound semiconductors is coming from a range of defense applications including radar, communications, EW and smart munitions," noted Asif Anwar. "While the F-22 may have fallen victim to budgetary pressures, programs like the F-22 have provided the template for a whole new generation of platforms that can boast superior capabilities as a result of compound semiconductor technologies."
