Connected Devices Fuel 1 Billion New Mobile Broadband Subs by 2014
Netbooks, Google Phone, Other Consumer Electronics Devices at CES to Spur Growth From CES, Las Vegas, NV - January 6, 2010 – Strategy Analytics forecasts growth of global active mobile broadband subscriptions via smartphones and other handsets, notebooks, netbooks and other consumer electronics from a base of 300 million in 2009 to 1.3 billion by the end of 2014. The Strategy Analytics Mobile Broadband Opportunities (MBO) service report, “Global Active Mobile Broadband Subscribers Forecast: 2008 - 2014,” also predicts that new technologies will play an important role in this growth, with LTE contributing 84% of net subscriber additions in 2014, and mobile WiMAX an additional 11%.
“Mobile Broadband is the exciting new frontier for consumer electronics, bringing a whole new world of connectivity, community and creativity to users. In 2014, almost half of mobile broadband net subscriber additions will be on devices other than mobile phones. Success will require new business models and partnerships, and Strategy Analytics is excited to see new announcements from Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile USA at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES),” says Susan Welsh de Grimaldo, Director of the Strategy Analytics Mobile Broadband Opportunities (MBO) service.
Phil Kendall, Executive Director, Strategy Analytics Global Wireless Practice, adds, “Devices offering a compelling user experience over LTE and WiMAX will be crucial for growth, although in five years, 3G will still account for two-thirds of active mobile broadband subscribers.”
Strategy Analytics expects mobile handsets, especially the new generation of smartphones like the iPhone, Droid and new Google Nexus One, to be the predominant device category using mobile broadband data services, followed by computing-centric devices like notebooks and netbooks. Other consumer electronics devices—including personal navigation devices (PNDs), personal media players (PMPs), game players, MP3 players, e-readers, digital picture frames, cameras and video recorders—will reach 11% of total active mobile broadband subscriptions by 2014.
