Baseband Market Up in Q1 '10
Benefits Went to MediaTek, Infineon, Spreadtrum
Boston, MA - July 6, 2010 –MediaTek, Infineon and Spreadtrum increased their share in cellular basebands in Q1 2010 as the market grew 6.8 percent sequentially in unit terms, as described in “Baseband Market Share Tracker Qualcomm Extends Revenue Share Lead,” and an accompanying short summary report from the Strategy Analytics RF & Wireless Component market research service. These reports, comprising a comprehensive analysis of the baseband market by air interface, supplier and OEM, explore quarterly shipments and share in revenue and unit terms.
According to Christopher Taylor, co-author of the reports, “Shipments of basebands grew sequentially in Q1 ‘10, a positive in that the first quarter is usually seasonally soft. Infineon, MediaTek and Spreadtrum made gains in market share in unit terms mostly at the expense of TI, Freescale and ST-Ericsson.”
Stuart Robinson, Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies market research service, added, “In 2009, Qualcomm extended its revenue market share lead over the competition on the strength of its design wins in UMTS and in smartphones. However, Qualcomm’s share increase stalled in Q1 ’10, implying that gaining share will prove more challenging for Qualcomm this year, in light of the competition and the number of new entrants in UMTS and LTE.”
