Affordability and Reliability Key to Driver Assistance Systems Growth

Up to 90 Million Automotive ADAS Systems by 2017

Boston, MA - October 5, 2010 – Despite the recession and the subsequent fall in R&D investment and delayed model cycles, the Strategy Analytics Automotive Electronics report, “ADAS Demand Outlook: Affordability and Reliability Key to Future Growth,” concludes that there will be renewed interest in developing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

In an increasingly competitive environment, OEMs are relying on safety features, such as ADAS, to differentiate their products and win market share—even deploying ADAS in lower-cost models. Although consumers have been keen to adopt ADAS, they are currently put off by the high cost of purchasing ADAS options. As a result, vendors are offering more affordable ADAS technologies.

According to the author of this report, Kevin Mak, Industry Analyst in the Strategy Analytics Automotive Electronics Service, “A general pattern is emerging from ADAS development, as cost reductions in one sensor type may force out the deployment of another. Also, OEM strategies are now geared toward offering more safety features than their rivals. With mandates such as those already in the heavy duty segment, and the recent Kids and Cars legislation in the US, ADAS will soon be making a significant impact on the auto industry.”

Mak adds, “While vendors add more features and integrate more components onto a system, they have not forgotten the importance of reliability and usability. Sensor fusion will be more prominent to make sure these ADAS systems work.”
