AESA Radar Essential Technology for Defense Platforms
Next Generation Fast Jets, Retrofits and Extension to other Platforms
Boston, MA - January 19, 2010 – AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar is now a core technology for defense platforms with future implementation supported by access to enabling semiconductor capabilities. The Strategy Analytics Advanced Defense Systems (ADS) service report, “Military Radar Status and Developments,” shows a growing trend toward AESA-based radar systems with:
- continued evolution of this technology on next generation fast jet platforms;
- retrofitting of these capabilities on existing platforms; and
- the insertion of AESA capabilities on ground, naval and space platforms.
Issues remain for AESA technology, including concerns with cost and complexity. For example, AESA systems add weight, which remains a bottleneck in applying this technology to the airborne radar retrofit market.
“Fast jet platforms, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35 Lightning II (JSF), have driven development and early demand for next-generation airborne AESA systems,” observed Asif Anwar, Director of the ADS service at Strategy Analytics. “There is a growing retrofit and export market for air platforms as well as the development of scalable solutions for insertion on ground, naval and space vehicles.”
“AESA radar systems bring a wide range of benefits including faster scanning, increased reliability, multi-role capabilities and advanced architectures,” commented Eric Higham, North American Director for ADS. “Access to enabling semiconductor capabilities will be crucial for the continued development of lighter, more efficient solutions that can be scalable and applied across a multitude of platforms.”
Strategy Analytics will be presenting an overview on AESA radar applications and market trends in a webinar on January 25, 2011. Click Here for more information.
