M2M Market Characterized by Consolidation and Standardization in 2012
Boston, MA - March 7, 2012 –The M2M (Machine-to-Machine) market consolidation will continue in 2012, and mobile operators will look to move up the value chain through partnering or creation of M2M service platforms. While fragmentation issues will be more readily addressed in 2012, challenges remain, as covered in the Strategy Analytics M2M Strategies report, “M2M 2012 Outlook: Towards Standardization, Cloud Platforms and Open Source.”
With new devices and services reaching varied Machine-to-Person and Person-to-Machine areas, such as consumer electronics and mHealth, M2M represents a sizeable opportunity, potentially reaching 4.3 billion connections by 2020. M2M opportunities abound in connected consumer devices, automation, mHealth devices, maintenance and vehicles.
This Strategy Analytics report highlights key themes driving the M2M market forward, including:
- The shift toward common M2M Standards;
- M2M Market Consolidation;
- Greater M2M Ecosystem Cooperation and Partnerships; and
- Shifts to Cloud Platforms and Open Standards.
“In Barcelona, at Mobile World Congress, M2M was a hot topic. Announced deals between Telefonica and GM Onstar, NTT DoCoMo and Jasper Wireless, as well as Nespresso with Sierra Wireless and Orange, highlight the growing importance of M2M and the increasingly global nature of M2M deployments,” said Andrew Brown, Director of Enterprise Research and author of the report. “Key trends outlined in this report must be in place for the M2M market to reach its multi-billion connection market promise by 2020,” he added.
Mr. Brown spoke at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on changing M2M market dynamics.
