Troop Withdrawals Slash Electronic Warfare Spend
Growth returns in 2015 with emphasis on flexibility, power, modularity and portability
Boston, MA - May 30, 2012 - Spending on land/ground-based electronic warfare (EW) platforms and systems will see a sharp decline over the next two years, as troop withdrawals from Iraq and Afghanistan obviate demand. The Strategy Analytics Advanced Defense Systems (ADS) service report, "Technology Trends for Land-based Electronic Warfare Systems," forecasts a drop in global spend on ground/land-based EW platforms and systems by an average 27 percent through 2014, as infantry expenditure for those wartime theatres draws to a close.
The withdrawal from these theatres will not change the general trend toward asymmetric warfare however, and unfortunately the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and radio-controlled improvised explosive devices (RCIEDs) will continue to proliferate. Moving forward, nations will look to leverage gained experience in order to assist troop counteraction against the threat of IEDs and RCIEDs in similar situations.
"The key to developing future EW system capabilities will be an evolutionary approach," observes Asif Anwar, Director of the ADS service at Strategy Analytics. "Emphasis will be on flexibility, power and modularity. This influences the system design as well as the choice of enabling technologies. Demand for ground/land-based EW systems will re-emerge from 2015 onward with global expenditure forecast to exceed $1 billion in 2022."
"As the signal environment continues to become more complex and congested, RF-based systems will need to be able to handle the complete frequency range," noted Eric Higham, ADS Service Director North America. "This will require higher performing field-programmable gate arrays and analog-to-digital converters, as well as wider use of GaN-based RF front-ends to facilitate development of systems that provide wide-band, multi-bit, real-time direct RF sampling and processing."
