8 Reasons Why Joyn Will Approach 300 m Users By 2017
Joyn Boosted By Native Support From HTC, LG, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony
Boston, MA - April 2, 2013 - Strategy Analytics' report "8 Reasons Why Joyn Has A Role In The Future Of Messaging," underlines how Joyn, an evolution of current mobile operator communication services, will allow mobile operators to remain relevant in mobile messaging, despite its slow roll-out and fierce competition from messaging applications like WhatsApp, Facebook, Blackberry Messenger and Apple's iMessage. To boost Joyn's chances of approaching 300 million users by 2017 1, operators must ensure Joyn can be discovered easily, is simple to access and use, supports the most widely used messaging features and is priced comparably against competitive offerings.
Strategy Analytics identifies the native integration of Joyn by handset OEMs, consumers' use of multiple communication services, and support for the most popular messaging features as three major reasons Joyn will become part of consumers' mobile communications mix.
Nitesh Patel, Director of the Wireless Media Strategies (WMS) research program, noted, "A key barrier to Joyns discoverability and availability will have been overcome once Joyn is integrated on handsets and works out-of-the-box, much like SMS and MMS. The recent announcement from Movistar, Vodafone and Orange in Spain, that handset OEMs Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony and Nokia will provide native support for Joyn, is a clear boost for operators that have both already launched Joyn or intend to do so in future."
To date, just nine operators in four countries have launched Joyn services. Strategy Analytics expects a continued fragmented launch of Joyn by operators over the next 12 months, with the decision to offer Joyn, dependent on deployment plans for LTE and the motivation to fight against OTT players.
David Kerr, Vice President at Strategy Analytics added, "We recommend operators rapidly launch Joyn services across multiple countries in order to provide a ubiquitous and evolved communication service with reach and reliability on a par with SMS. Companies such as Interop, Mavenir Systems, NewPace, Jibe Mobile and Vodafone provide hosted platforms to enable operators to launch Joyn services rapidly and at a lower cost, without deploying IMS into the network."
