Cisco Completes
Mobile Infrastructure Portfolio
Boston, MA - May
2, 2013
– Cisco’s recently announced acquisition of small cell provider Ubiquisys
positions the IP vendor to compete head-to-head with Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson,
Huawei, NSN and other mobile infrastructure vendors. Cisco has been steadily building
and acquiring elements of mobile infrastructure for over a decade, and the
Ubiquisys solutions along with acquisition of Intucell
for Self Optimizing Network (SON) software and
Radio Access Network (RAN) multi-vendor HetNet management, nearly completes the
portfolio.
“The advent of ‘All IP’ networking has changed
the game and next generation 4G LTE has opened the door for traditional
Internet players like Cisco to provide complete End-to-End (E2E) solutions in a
market previously dominated by traditional equipment manufacturers like
Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei and NSN,” noted Sue Rudd, Strategy Analytics
Director Service
Provider Analysis. “Cisco has evolved a very complete set of mobile
infrastructure components. The challenge is whether it can fully integrate these
elements to convince mobile operators that they are now the preferred prime
vendor.”
“Several recent customer wins indicate that operators
are willing to consider Cisco’s ‘Elastic Architecture’” added Susan Welsh de
Grimaldo, Director Wireless
Networks & Platforms. “Deutsche Telekom (DT) has a Croatian subsidiary
that is testing Cisco in the first phase of DT’s ‘TeraStream Architecture’. Cisco
has partnered very successfully with its operator customers but will need to
pre-integrate and test solutions with other vendors to truly compete as the
prime contractor and benefit from related service margins.”
In a major new report Strategy Analytics examines

Core, Edge, Policy and Control and now RAN. Did Cisco just add the final pieces
to the Mobile Infrastructure puzzle?
