Strategy Analytics at Super Mobility Week (CTIA)
LTE, Internet of Things, Corporate Mobility and NFC expected to dominate discussion
Boston, MA - September 5, 2014 - Strategy Analytics’ analysts expect momentum behind LTE networks and devices to build at Super Mobility Week. Corporate mobility and the Internet of Things (IoT) is coming of age, while NFC is back on the agenda for the mobile industry.
Strategy Analytics announced its enterprise and M2M Executive Director, Andrew Brown, will present on a panel for the M2M and IoT track on Platforms as a Service for M2M on Day 2 of Super Mobility Week. Kevin Burden, Director of Enterprise Mobility, will be joining Andrew at the show and be available for discussions and commentary.
Strategy Analytics has watched M2M and IoT move a long way since 2013. While some trends are evolutionary in nature, such as continued consolidation and “upstream” value chain partnerships, others are having a far more seismic impact, such as the realization of the third industrial revolution, driven by big data analytics and the fundamental blurring of boundaries between consumer IoT developments and platforms and M2M, which will see new partnerships emerge as well as disruptive new business models.
In the enterprise space, Kevin is sharing Strategy Analytics’ vision of the enterprise market and discussing how Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) and big data analytics will dominate the enterprise mobility sphere going forward and how security software companies will continue to ramp up their control of mobile endpoints; carriers and systems integrators will continue to blend UC, collaboration, virtualization and mobility management to offer a more holistic ‘workspace management’ capability.
“CTIA will again be a showcase for the mobility technologies that continue to disrupt the operations and traditional management of corporate IT departments,” said Burden “BYOD has been a catalyst for a variety of product and service categories that are helping IT evolve its view of personally-owned devices from that of a ‘problem’ to avoid, to a manageable movement helping the company keep pace with growing productivity expectations. The wave of consolidation in the mobility management field over the past year means we will likely see announcements on the progress acquirers are making towards more integrated workspace suites, as well as more partnerships from EMM providers needing to improve tool sets. Separating personal from corporate data on mobile devices is a necessary competency of EMM most agree with, but without a mature method that is fully trusted by employees and management, we will likely see further advancements in the secure container solutions as well as other methods that maybe revisited, such as mobile device virtualization.”
Linda Sui, Director of Wireless Smartphone Strategies research, is looking at the development of LTE. “Strategy Analytics forecast global LTE smartphone sales to make up 39% of total smartphone sales in 2014, up from 25% one year ago. LTE is the fasted growing sub-segment in global smartphone market. Meanwhile, LTE-Advanced smartphone, which we define as one with LTE-Advanced chipset / modem and relevant software setting allowing it to meet the requirements of 3GPP Rev 10 and above standard, will represent the new growth driver in LTE market. Samsung and LG are currently leading the pack in LTE-Advanced smartphone market, thanks to the quick adoption of LTE Carrier Aggregation in South Korea. However, if a new iPhone supports LTE-Advanced, we believe Apple will quickly gain ground from Korean rivals in this fast-growing segment.”
David MacQueen, Executive Director, Apps and Media, said “Mobile’s integration with other verticals is becoming increasingly important. Partnerships with retail and mobile payments are slowly gathering momentum, and while Apple may not be at the show, expected announcements from the company simultaneous with Super Mobility Week should inspire much discussion on this topic. NFC integration with phones, tablets and wearables will be a key driver for this market. Other key verticals include the connected car, with major vehicle manufacturers such as Ford having a strong presence at the show. Mobility is truly becoming pervasive in the home, in the car and in-store.”
