Boston, MA - March 21, 2007 - According to the Strategy Analytics GaAs service report on 3GSM 2007, suppliers of power amplifiers, front-end modules and transceivers emphasized their strong product mixes to provision custom solutions at handset OEMs -- including cost-effective solutions for emerging regional markets and leading-edge products to meet the challenges of W-CDMA and beyond. GPRS handsets will continue to make up a significant portion of the cellular handset market, especially in emerging regional markets, while the momentum behind 3G/3.5G, and its successors, emphasizes requirements for multi-mode and multi-band architectures. GaAs device manufacturers demonstrated products at both ends of the spectrum.

"Power amplifier (PA) manufacturers demonstrated complete families of power amplifiers and front-end modules that can be catered to specific handset OEM requirements," noted Asif Anwar, Director, GaAs and Compound Semiconductor Technologies for Strategy Analytics. "Companies demonstrated simple PA modules to PA-filter modules incorporating SAW and BAW filter technologies as well as multi-band front-end transmit modules that included GaAs HBT and GaAs pHEMT technologies."

Christopher Taylor, Director, RF & Wireless Components for Strategy Analytics, added, "Handset OEMs need solutions that will work across multiple regions by supporting W-CDMA, EDGE and legacy GSM and GPRS modes. At 3GSM, transceiver makers demonstrated multi-band W-EDGE transceivers. Also notable was that most of the transceivers announced at the 3GSM conference were based on CMOS rather than SiGe, demonstrating the evolving maturity of CMOS technology."
