Mobile Application Store Best Practices

Boston, MA - March 16, 2011 – Drawing upon user experience evaluations of six leading mobile application stores, the Strategy Analytics Wireless Media Lab has updated its best practice guidelines for providing a superior application store user experience. The App Stores reviewed were: Android Market, Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, GetJar, Nokia Ovi Store and Windows MarketPlace, The report, "Mobile Application Stores: Best Practices and User Evaluations," provides an in-depth analysis of each application store and describes guidelines for creating a more user-friendly experience.
According to Paul Brown, Director, Strategy Analytics User Experience Practice, the best practice guidelines which contribute to a superior user experience can be broken down into five main categories:- App Store Structure & Layout;
- App Discovery & Search;
- App Description & Overview;
- Price and Purchasing; and
- Downloads.
Kevin Nolan, Vice-President at Strategy Analytics, added, "With the amount of applications available to download increasing to over 250,000 in some stores, application stores should be simple to navigate. Content discovery has already become increasingly important. A simplified, yet powerful search process is required; as is the ability to quickly filter in order to find relevant content."
