Electronic Warfare-MilSatComs Implementation Outlook

Defense Sector Needs EMS Domain

Boston, MA - August 3, 2011 –Regardless of the roles and domains in which Electronic Warfare (EW) is employed, the strategic importance of military satellite communications MilSatComs for EW operations will increase over the next decade. The Strategy Analytics Advanced Defense Systems (ADS) service report, “The Strategic Impact of Milsatcoms on Electronic Warfare,” outlines several recommendations for successful implementation over the next decade, which would ensure full efficacy.

Electronic Warfare uses the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) in three roles across air, sea and land warfare domains, including Electronic Attack (EA), Electronic Protection (EP), and Electronic Warfare Support (ES).  Regardless of the roles and domains in which Electronic Warfare is employed, communications is a crucial foundation for the successful use of EW systems. Also, Space Communications Systems (SCS) and specifically military satellite communications (MilSatCom) are an EW force multiplier as EA/EP/EW, Cyber/Info, and kinetic warfare become increasingly integrated and net-centric.

“The strategic importance of MilSatComs for EW operations will continue to increase over the next decade,” noted Asif Anwar, ADS Service Director. “Strategy Analytics sees an argument for recognizing the electromagnetic spectrum as another defense domain. The successful implementation of MilSatComs in conjunction with EW systems also needs continuing investment in EW technology, which may be hamstrung by budgetary pressure.”

Eric Higham, ADS Service Director for North America, added, “Other recommendations outlined in the report include the need for continued development of a net-centric doctrine in order to allow MilSatCom systems to be used effectively in conjunction with EW systems.”
