Mobile Broadband Connections on PCs and Modems to Hit $65 Billion Service Revenues in 2017
Emerging Market Growth and 200 Million New LTE Modem and PC Connections Contribute to 20 Million Terabytes of Mobile Data Traffic
Boston, MA and London, UK - December 12, 2012 - Mobile broadband connections on PCs and modems will reach half a billion by 2017, driving $65 billion in service revenues and nearly 20 million Terabytes of mobile data traffic, according to Strategy Analytics latest global forecasts. Two new Strategy Analytics reports, "Mobile Broadband Device Connections: PC Modems Hit $65 B Service Revenues in 2017" and "Global Active Mobile Broadband PC/Modem Subscription Forecast: 2007-2017," highlight the market opportunity for PC/modem connections on mobile networks by region and for 37 countries.
Susan Welsh de Grimaldo, Director Mobile Broadband Opportunities, says, "Two key drivers for the mobile broadband PC modem market are 4G LTE deployments and strong subscription growth in emerging markets, such as China and India, where operators are adding 3G connections. With more LTE deployments around the globe, mobile broadband rivals fixed networks. LTE becomes the connection of choice for USB modems, embedded PCs and mobile hotspots that provide wide area mobility to WiFi devices."
Phil Kendall, Director Wireless Operator Strategies, notes: "The joint impacts of substitution to tablets, smartphones and tethering have been felt stronger in developed markets, exacerbated in some regions by the macro-economic situation. Mobile broadband modem connections are currently flat or even declining in markets such as the UK, Spain and Portugal, with more casual price-sensitive users dropping connections. Yet we see solid growth for the PC/modem category over the next five years, enhanced by the increasing number of shared data/multi-SIM plans and growing 3G and 4G coverage, with 27 percent growth anticipated year-over-year from 2011 to 2012 and nearly 20 percent CAGR from 2012-17"
