MediaTek Grabs Number Two Spot in LTE Basebands in Q3 2014
The lead which Qualcomm has over competitors is narrowing
Boston, MA - January 27, 2015 - The global cellular baseband processor market registered a modest 5 percent year-on-year to reach $5.5 billion in Q3 2014, according to Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies (HCT) service report, “Baseband Market Share Tracker Q3 2014: LTE Baseband Revenue Crosses 50 Percent Mark.”

According to Strategy Analytics, Qualcomm, MediaTek, Spreadtrum, Marvell and Intel captured the top-five baseband revenue share spots in Q3 2014. Qualcomm continued its baseband market dominance with 64 percent revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 17 percent revenue share and Spreadtrum with 6 percent revenue share.
According to Sravan Kundojjala, Associate Director, “Strategy Analytics estimates that for the first time LTE basebands accounted for over 50 percent of Qualcomm’s total baseband shipments in Q3 2014, thanks to new Snapdragon and Gobi chips and China LTE momentum. However, Qualcomm's LTE baseband competitors made progress during the quarter and as a result Qualcomm's LTE baseband unit share dropped from about 95 percent in Q3 2013 to less than 80 percent in Q3 2014. Strategy Analytics believes that despite increasing competition in the LTE baseband market Qualcomm continues to do well with its leading-edge product portfolio and strong relationships with handset manufacturers.”
According to Stuart Robinson, Executive Director of the Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technologies service, “Despite being a late entrant in the LTE baseband market, MediaTek captured the number two spot in the LTE baseband market in Q3 2014, overtaking Marvell. Strategy Analytics believes that the growth in LTE could fuel MediaTek’s baseband revenue growth over the next few quarters.”
According to Christopher Taylor, Director of the Strategy Analytics RF and Wireless Component (RFWC) service, “During Q3 2014, HiSilicon, Intel, Marvell and Samsung also made progress in LTE basebands. HiSilicon capitalised on multiple LTE device design-wins at its parent company Huawei while Intel also ramped up its LTE shipments with the help of high-profile design-wins at Samsung.”
